How to Grow a Giant Sunflower from Seed

Brought to you by AH Gardening Services – Nottingham's Lawn Care, Hedge Trimming, and Fencing Experts

At AH Gardening Services, we love seeing gardens full of colour, character, and life. That’s why this season, we’re giving away free sunflower seeds – along with expert tips on how you can grow a giant sunflower in your own garden!

Follow this simple guide to grow a sunflower that’s sure to impress your neighbours (and give your garden a brilliant, cheerful boost).

Step 1: Choose the Right Spot

Sunflowers love the sun!
Pick a sunny, sheltered spot in your garden – ideally somewhere that gets at least 6–8 hours of sunlight a day. The more sunshine, the better your sunflower will grow.

🌻 Top Tip: Choose a spot near a fence or wall for support – just like the strong fencing we install at AH Gardening Services!

Step 2: Prepare the Soil

Sunflowers prefer well-drained soil that’s rich in nutrients.
Before planting, dig the soil over and mix in some compost or organic matter. This will give your sunflower the best possible start.

(Need a hand with larger garden projects like lawn care, fencing, or hedge trimming? We’re here to help – find out more on our website! 🌿)

Step 3: Planting Your Sunflower Seeds

  • When to plant: Late April to early June (depending on the last frost in Nottingham).

  • How to plant: Sow seeds about 1.5 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart if you're starting them outdoors.
If you prefer, you can start them indoors in small pots and move them outside once they’re strong enough.

💧 Water lightly after planting to settle the seeds into place.

Step 4: Water and Care

Sunflowers are pretty easygoing, but they need regular watering, especially while they’re young.
Water deeply once or twice a week – more during dry spells. Always water at the base to avoid soggy leaves.

✅ Keep the area around your sunflowers free from weeds to reduce competition for nutrients.

Step 5: Support Your Growing Giant

As your sunflower grows (some varieties can reach over 3 metres tall!), it might need a little help.
Use a bamboo cane or garden stake to gently support the stem, tying it loosely with soft string.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Giant Sunflower!

In just a few months, you’ll be rewarded with a towering sunflower – perfect for brightening your garden, attracting bees, and even harvesting seeds later in the year!
